How She Asked
It’s not unlike my partner to Tierra to make grand gestures, especially on my birthdays. One year, she tied gift cards to my favorite boutiques to gigantic helium balloons, and let them float into my room before we went on a shopping spree. Her first birthday gift to me, shortly after we “became official,” she gave me a bag filled with Take 5s – my all time favorite candy bar and journals to confide in.
Over the past decade, she has always found ways to make my birthdays special. This year, she said she had an out of town surprise for my birthday, and we took a quick trip from Los Angeles down to beautiful La Jolla Cove.
When we got there, we pulled up to a tiny green park overlooking the ocean. There was the prettiest picnic I’d ever seen with an awesome charcuterie board and of course, champagne. I thought this was the birthday surprise and was just happy to be sipping and snacking, spending time with my favorite person, and taking in the breathtaking scenery. We always take polaroid pics of our adventures so I didn’t suspect a thing when we started snapping away - getting selfies and close ups of the beautiful spread.
Tierra asked me if I’d take one of her, so I stood up to get the perfect angle. Right before I pressed the button, she dropped to one knee and pulled out the most gorgeous ring I’ve ever seen in my life. The flash went off right as she popped the question, simply “Will you marry me?”
I didn’t even realize it but there was a photographer and a videographer (a great friend of ours) right there to capture the moment. They popped out of nowhere. I felt weak in the knees, my voice went up three octaves. I kept repeating, “Are you serious?! Are you serious!?” Of course I said yes. I’d been waiting on this moment for the past 10 years, even though I knew it would come within 10 minutes of us meeting. A few tears escaped and there was plenty of laughter and just like that… we’re engaged!
We finished our picnic (I was wondering why Tierra hadn’t eaten anything!) and went to take in more views, and capture some memories of the moment. Tierra hired Khoa, a San Diego based photographer who made the whole experience fun and so easy.
Our incredibly talented friend Tyler was there for video. The set up was from an adorable pop-up picnic company Picnic by Nature.
NOW, let’s talk about the ring. The ring comes from Point No Point Studio. Tierra picked the individual stones and had the ring custom-created based on her own design with morganite and blush diamonds. There’s not another one exactly like it anywhere. I love jewelry and have always been dreamy about engagement rings. This one exceeded my every expectation. It’s so stunning and very unique. I just love it.
At this point - everything is so new and we have no set plans yet. The only thing we know for sure is that we’re planning a wedding for 2022. For those of you who have planned a wedding - what tips do you have? Ya girls need all the advice we can get! Check out the full proposal video!
